2010 Field Staff
Corey Paluga returns to New Market in 2010 as the head coach after serving as an assistant in 2009. “Corey brings continuity, character, and a sound baseball background to the Rebel organization,” comments Bruce Alger. Paluga was named the Head Assistant Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey in August 2009. He spent the three previous seasons as a graduate assistant at Lynchburg College, his alma mater. While at Lynchburg, Corey was part of a coaching staff that led the Hornets to 3 ODAC conference tournament bids, 2 regular season championships, and their first bid to the regional tournament since 1983. Lynchburg amassed a record of 80-45 during Paluga’s time there. A strong-armed catcher on Lynchburg’s varsity during his 4-year college career, Corey threw out 43% of would-be base stealers as a Hornet. Adept at working with catchers, Corey is also an excellent teacher of hitting skills. With a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Paluga earned his Master’s of Education at Lynchburg in Spring 2009. Paluga resides in Hoboken, NJ and is a native of Williamsburg, Virginia where he attended Lafayette High School.
John Combs returns for his third season in New Market as an assistant coach as well as the strength and conditioning coach. Combs is in his first year as an assistant coach at the University of Rio Grande, in Rio Grande, OH. Combs works with the outfielders as well as being the first base coach and the Head JV coach for the RedStorm. Combs came back to his alma mater after coaching and running the strength program at Whiteoak High School, in Mowrystown, OH, for the past 2 years. Combs played 4 years of baseball at Rio Grande and obtained his degree in education. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree. Combs currently resides in Rio Grande, OH
Daniel Rollins is currently in his first year with George Washington University as an assistant baseball coach. His responsibilities include, working with pitchers, on-campus recruiting,coordinating camps, and coaching first base among other duties . He went to George Washington from Randolph-Macon College, where he served as the volunteer assistant to former Rebels manager Ray Hedrick. Rollins also played at R-MC for Hedrick as a releif pitcher and catcher. He will be returning to New Market this summer for his second season as the Rebels pitching coach. Rollins currently resides in Fairfax, VA.
"Mo" returns for his 16th year as Assistant Coach for the Rebels. "Mo" has a Bachelors of Science Degree from Winona State University and a Masters of Science from William and Mary University. He has managed or coached at all levels of NCAA Collegiate baseball, including head coach on the Division I level. "Mo" has also managed and coached in a number of Summer Collegiate Leagues in the United States. "Mo" resides in Luray, VA.
Philip Betterly will be joining the New Market Rebels for the first time in 2010 as an assistant coach for the summer. Phil will be helping in all facets of the game, while with the Rebels. He is currently in his first year as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Methodist University. His duties include working with catchers and hitters. He also serves as the first base coach for the varsity team and third base coach for the developmental team. Philip has accepted a position at Frostburg State for next year.
Abbie returns for her seventh season as Head Athletic Trainer for the Rebels. Abbie is completing her first year as Head Athletic Trainer at Strasburg High School. Prior to working at SHS, she was employed as a clinical athletic trainer for Sentara Careplex Hospital’s Rehab Services. Abbie has also been the Director of First Aid for the Paul Webb All-Star Basketball Team Camp held every July in Richmond, VA. In 2006, she was a member of the Athletic Training Staff for the Cornerstone Bancard Hula Bowl held in Honolulu, HI. Abbie is a graduate of Bridgewater College and holds a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. She resides in Strasburg, VA.
Mary Jo (MJ) Ritchie Graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 2003 then attended Bridgewater College and graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. She spent a lot of time working with athletes at Turner Ashby High School during her senior year. She has worked at Bridgewater Retirement Community for the past nine years in Dining Services as a summer and part-time job while in high school and college. This will be her first season with the New Market Rebels while looking into a full-time job working in a secondary school or college D-II or D-III as an athletic trainer.
This is Katie's fourth year with the Rebels and is the Team Liaison for the Rebels.
