Elbow UpdatesNew Market, VA - May 28, 2010 Elbow injuries were a common problem for various Rebels during last year’s campaign and throughout the off-season. Unfortunately, that trend is continuing this year as shortstop Zak Messer has come down with a sore elbow that may require surgery and he will, therefore, not be returning to New Market this season as originally planned. Catcher Will Cooper, who had his elbow broken in a game late last season, is finally back on the field. Will’s dad, Chris, reports that he is playing on a temporary contract for Petersburg of the Coastal Carolina League and threw out a would-be base stealer in his first game. Will has had a long and difficult recuperation and it is great to know he is back on the diamond. Another Rebel catcher from last year, George Carroll reports that his elbow is doing well. Carroll had Tommy John surgery last fall. Pitchers Spencer Clifft and Eric Alessio from last year’s squad have also undergone Tommy John surgery since last season. Clifft’s surgery occurred last week. Hopefully, the 2010 squad will enjoy better health than last year’s team! Players report this Sunday and Opening Night takes place Thursday, June 3 at Harrisonburg. |
