Rebels Clinch Playoff Berth
New Market, VA—August 3, 2010
The New Market Rebels managed only a 3-8 record coming down the stretch, but it was good enough to clinch the 8th and final spot in the playoffs which begin tonight against the top-seeded Haymarket Senators at Haymarket. The Rebels finished one game ahead of both Rockbridge and Staunton.
The three victories that the Rebels did record in the season’s final quarter were among the most exciting of the season. Scoring a run in the 8th and two in the 9th, the Rebels defeated Covington on July 25th 6-5 with Franco Ramirez driving in the winning run. Andrew Kirk turned in the best pitching performance of the season on July 31st with a must-win 4-hit, 1-0 victory over the Luray Wranglers at Rebel Park. In another must-win situation the next night, the Rebels defeated Haymarket 3-2 in 10 innings with Brent Mikionis providing the winning hit.
Kevin Brown swung a torrid bat down the stretch for New Market, raising his final average to .292 and contributing many big hits.
Perhaps the most exciting news for the Rebel Family was the signing of Blaine Sims to a professional contract in the Atlanta Braves organization. The official signing is to take place today. The lefty from Arkansas Tech will be sorely missed by the Rebels in the playoffs, but the entire New Market organization, from officials to fans shares in his excitement.
The first round of the playoffs is a best two out of three format. The next New Market home game is tomorrow, Wednesday, August 4th.
